I have an annoying left ankle that never recovered from a fracture so, after a lot of research, trial and error I realised that I require a neutral trainer to cushion my ankle. Off-road, this cushioning isn’t so important, where-as sticking to the trail is so I have my trail shoes. In an ideal world i’d have a pair of racing flats too, but hey, I’m not made of money! Then there’s the Garmin – perfect for measuring training improvements and invaluable for keeping pace on race day…

Road Trainers: Nike Lunarglide+5 trainers – for road running and races. Great cushioning and support and work wonders for my ankle.

Trail Trainers: Asics Gel Fuji Trainer2 – good grip but not much cushioning. The best I could get at the lowest price.

GPS/watch: Garmin Forerunner 610 – touchscreen, locks on to satellite signal pretty quickly and easy to use. Only negative is that the touchscreen becomes impossible to use when it’s raining.
