You know what it’s like; you buy what you think looks like a waterproof running jacket, only to get soaked to the skin in the first rain shower! Slightly uncomfortable if you’re running a 5k fun run and flippin dangerous if you’re running far or in cold weather. So, to take the guess work out of choosing a jacket, we’ve narrowed it down to three, low to high priced coats to wear on the run.

What is a Waterproof Running Jacket?

Waterproof jackets are the final protective layer in your layering system. This layer provides a waterproof barrier.

The main difference between these waterproof layers is the fabric they are made from and the level of breathe-ability that this will give you.

The level of breathability you need is dependent on your chosen activity:

  • High aerobic activities (such as mountain climbing, hill walking etc) require the use of highly breathable fabrics.
  • Less intensive activities (such as day to day use, or lowland walking) require a less breathable garment.

Obviously, the more efficient the garment is at keeping water out, the harder it is to help moisture given off by your body evaporate away. So there’s a direct correlation between the degree of waterproofing, breathe-ability and price. The lower priced option will keep water out to a greater or lesser extent but may start to feel clammy. A top of the range offering such as that by Nike below, costs more but will keep you warm, dry and visible!

1. The Cheap Waterproof Running Jacket! – New Balance Men’s & Women’s Sequence

New Balance Women’s Waterproof Running Jacket – £20.99 (£26.99 men’s)

Currently reduced from £34.99 to £20.99 (£26.99 mens) at Runners Need. Buy it here

The New Balance Sequence Jacket has a ‘hydrophobic polyester yarn’ that wicks away moisture from your body and dry fast. Made of 100% polyester, it’s wind and water resistant. Yes it’s resistant – but at this price, under a downpour you’re still going to start to feel the wet but under testing it did keep skin dry under light rain for an extended period. It’s packed full of hi-vis reflective logos, trims and a centre front zip and also has a rear vent for extra breathability, plus a zip pocket for those gels.

2. Best Value – Inov-8 Raceshell 220 Running Jacket

Inov-8 Raceshell 220 Waterproof Running Jacket – £79.99

Currently reduced from £120 to £79.99 at Wiggle – Based in the Pennine hills in the UK, Inov-8 are well known for their excellent trail running footwear. They also come up trumps with this jacket. Although lacking in reflectiveness for high visibility (maybe they expect you to be wearing it on a mountain trail rather than a road), the Raceshell 220 scores highly in terms of its waterproofing capability. It’s PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane keeps the rain out, whilst the inner has a good degree of breathe-ability.

3. Best of the Best (Money No Object) – Nike Shield Flash Max

Nike Shield Flash Max – £350

Currently £350 at Nike.com

If you want a waterproof, high visibility running jacket and £350 is burning a hole in your wallet, then the Shield Flash Max is the jacket for you. It’s extremely reflective, totally waterproof using Nike’s proprietary Storm-FIT fabric and has laminated vents to enable full breathability.

Hooded and brightly reflective, no-ones going to miss you when you wear this out to running club!
